The grants, announced June 22, will support remedial programs developed by Valencia throughu Achievingthe Dream: Community Colleges Count, a multiyear nationapl initiative aimed at increasing college graduation rates among disadvantagedc students. The state will get also get $300,00 0 over three years to collaboraterwith K-12 to reducew the need for remedial education.
Connecticut, Texas and Virginia also got the which will be used to develop new policiex acceleratingthe states’ remedial education The Florida grants are part of a $16.t million effort to improve remedial educationn at community colleges in five states, reaching aboutr 45,000 students nationwide. Four states and 14 othere colleges received similar Gates grants for their Achievinf theDream program. Each community colleger will receive $743,000 over three years to expand its Lumina Foundation for Education has alsocommittedd $1.5 million to this initiative for evaluationh and communications.
About 375,000 Floridaa degree-seeking students annually attend a loca lcmmunity college, with nearly 40 percenrt of them taking remedial classes to builde basic academic skills. National studies have showhn nearly two-thirds of those takinf remedial classesnever graduate, but successful programs at severalk colleges demonstrate these numbers can be improved.
